The Freight Train Quilt Along is finally here! Below, you can see the tutorials for each Freight Train quilt block and do them at your own pace. I loved making this for my little 3 year old, and even though he wasn’t excited about it on his birthday (a quilt can’t compete with actual cars and trucks) he sleeps with it every night…which makes me pretty happy.
In order to make your train, you’ll have to download the Freight Train Master Cut List. The cut list gives the requirements for one train (you’ll have a few extra neutral pieces left over at the end…I figured it’d be better to cut a few extra 1.5″ squares then have to cut more because you lost one).
I do have some quilt kits available for sale at $15/kit, plus shipping. The kit includes all the pieces on the cut list, which is enough to make one set of train cars. Let me know if you’re interested (send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org) and I’ll make an etsy listing for you.
The Fabric Requirements for your quilt will depend on how many trains you’re doing. But, here’s some estimates for the fabric requirements to make five trains:
– a fat quarter of each color you want for the trains
– 2 1/2 yards neutral fabric
– 1 1/2 yard Black fabric (for the engine and tracks)
If you want to finish a play mat with only one train, look at the last couple videos in the playlist to see how I did it.
I hope you enjoy this tutorial!
