This quilt was inspired by the first picture in this post from Amy Smart’s blog Diary of a Quilter. It caught my eye partly because I loved the quilt and wanted to make one, but also because the quilter in this picture lived across the street from me when I was a little girl. Her daughter and I were best friends. It’s fun to have a hobby in common with many of the ladies I looked up to as a kid.
This design is a classic one and if referred to as a “Trip Around the World” quilt. I love how the color pattern flows out like a firework. When I first started planning this quilt, I wanted to find a way to just sew a bunch of strips together and use that as a shortcut to make the quilt. I was having trouble getting it to work. I sketched it out and finally I had my engineering husband give me a little help and we figured it out. With that shortcut, it’s much easier to assemble then is looks.
You can see the video tutorial here. The quilt finishes at 49″ x 49″
Also, we got to take our kids to our local carnival last week. Isn’t summer the best!
